new music recorded with recently restored and heavily customized “Black Serge” system

Thomas Ankersmit was invited by the CalArts electronic music studios, where the Serge was originally developed in the early 1970s, to record new music.

Finely tuned and highly detailed, yet also visceral and raw piece is a result of it. The sounds have a real-world physicality, bringing to mind swarms of locusts, distant storms and creaking machinery rather than “synthesizer music”

Phill Niblock honored with prestigious John Cage award

CONGRATULATIONS to Phill Niblock on winning John Cage award 2014!

This great news has been announced in January by The Foundation for Contemporary Arts (FCA), a New York nonprofit arts organization.

"Mr Niblock has been an active presence in the avant-garde music scene for more than 50 years. Since the 1960s, he has created multi- layered performance installations that incorporate simultaneous events in sound, film, video and photography. His music is composed of several microtonal drones with nearly imperceptible changes over long durations."

Niblock should not only be regarded as one of the most interesting composers of our time…. but also as a vital organizational personality in the creative life of New York. He has turned his vast apartment into a studio for his Experimental Intermedia project, which continues to regularly host events with up-and-coming as well as established musicians and artists.
